This extraordinary book explains the engine that has catapulted the Internet from backwater to ubiquity—and reveals that it is sputtering precisely because of its runaway success. With the unwitting help of its users, the generative Internet is on a path to a lockdown, ending its cycle of innovation—and facilitating unsettling new kinds of control. partners. These “tethered appliances” have already been used in remarkable but little-known ways: car GPS systems have been reconfigured at the demand of law enforcement to eavesdrop on the occupants at all times, and digital video recorders have been ordered to self-destruct thanks to a lawsuit against the manufacturer thousands of miles away. New Web 2.0 platforms like Google mash-ups and Facebook are rightly touted—but their applications can be similarly monitored and eliminated from a central source. As tethered appliances and applications eclipse the PC, the very nature of the Internet—its “generativity,” or innovative character—is at risk. The Internet’s current trajectory is one of lost opportunity. Its salvation, Zittrain argues, lies in the hands of its millions of users. Drawing on generative technologies like Wikipedia that have so far survived their own successes, this book shows how to develop new technologies and social structures that allow users to work creatively and collaboratively, participate in solutions, and become true “netizens.”

Nokia introduced the N8 phone, its first smartphone based on the highly-anticipated Symbian 3 operating system, designed to challenge Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android devices in the high-end handset market.

The Espoo, Finland-based company said the N8 features a 12.0-megapixel lens with Carl Zeiss optics and a Xenon flash to capture photos and record DVD-quality videos, rivaling those found in digital cameras.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNqWJcjf4Y0]

The handset can also stream Web TV services, browse social networks and navigate the globe with free mapping software.

Running Nokia’s new Symbian 3 operating system, the N8 has a more responsive and user-friendly interface, faster multi-tasking capabilities and multi-touch functionality with flick scrolling and pinch-zoom options — similar to the iPhone.

Earlier this week, Nokia said the launch of its Symbian 3 phones would be delayed into the third quarter, disappointing many analysts who say the embattled handset maker has fallen behind in the highly-competitive and profitable smartphone sector.

The beleaguered company, which has lacked a top-range model to challenge Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Nexus One devices, is counting on the new software to turnaround its fortunes and regain lost market share.

Nokia said the N8 will be available for $495 in selected markets starting in the third quarter.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg admitted the settings had “gotten complex” for users.

It follows a storm of protest from users over a series of changes on the site that left its members unsure about how public their information had become.

“We want people to be able to share information in the way that they want,” he told BBC News.

“Our goal is not to make your information more private or more open.”

The new system will offer users one privacy page with a list of all their applications and a choice of three settings for each.

The redesigned privacy page allows users to see all their information in one grid and apply privacy settings to each. Facebook will suggest defaults.

As with the changes made in December, users will be able to choose to share their applications with just friends, friends of friends or everyone.

“We’ve focused on three things: a single control for your content, more powerful controls for your basic information and an easy control to turn off all applications,” said Mark Zuckerberg, speaking at Facebook’s Palo Alto headquarters.

People who want more “granular control” will still be able to access existing settings.

Facebook has also reduced the amount of information that is visible to everyone. People will now be able to control who sees their interest pages and friends lists.

Users will also be able to turn off applications to ensure no information is shared without consent.

One of the things users found complicated was the need to apply new settings to every new feature introduced on the site.

From today, whatever setting users choose for “Sharing on Facebook” will now automatically be applied to any new products.

Initial reactions to the changes questioned whether Facebook had gone far enough.

Big battle

“The vast majority of people don’t use privacy settings so the reforms are not likely to have as great an impact,” said Simon Davies, director of Privacy International.

“If the default is for less information then we’ve really made a step forward,” he said.

With European privacy commissioners calling for companies to set defaults for the minimum sharing of information, the big battle could be “yet to come”, he warned.

“That’s where the rubber hits the road at a legal level.”

Andrew Walls, a research director at analyst firm Gartner wondered how the changes would affect Facebook’s business model.

“Some questions not really answered were issues around the sharing of personal data with advertisers for doing targeted ads based on profile content. That’s a tricky one – how do you make money if you can’t sell targeted ads? How do you compete with Google?”

“They want sufficient privacy to attract users into service and take advantage of it but some sharing of data is also required in order for Facebook to make money,” he said.

But Mr Zuckerberg told BBC News that it was a “misconception” that the site relied on people sharing information to make money from adverts.

“No information is sold to advertisers. For the business part of Facebook, it makes no difference what your privacy settings are.”

Mr Zuckerberg said that developers had “worked weekends, camped out in the conference centre” in order to overhaul its privacy settings.

“The number one thing we’ve heard to that the settings have gotten complex and hard for people to use,” he said.

“It is something we take very seriously,” he added.

He spent time explaining how Facebook has evolved from a very basic system when it was launched in 2004 to the 400m user site it is today.

“When we started Facebook, we built it around a few simple ideas. People want to share and stay connected with their friends and the people around them. When you have control over what you share, you want to share more. When you share more, the world becomes more open and connected,” he said.

But since then the site has rolled out hundreds of new features and, alongside them, a raft a privacy settings.

Changes made to the site earlier this year and in December 2009 infuriated users and led to formal complaints from privacy groups.

The European Commission described the changes as “unacceptable”.

Face Unlock is one of the most exciting new features for Ice Cream Sandwich but, according to a Google spokesperson, the idea that hackers could access your smartphone using a photo of your face “might work“.

Accepting Google’s claim this innovative piece of technology “will only get better”, this is still a significant setback for Android 4.0 if found to be the case. The Ice Cream Sandwich feature should only allow use of a handset when it recognises ‘real’ facial features.

The possibility of such a bug occurring had previously been denied by Android developer Tim Bray, who when responding to an accusation Face Unlock was hackable stated, “Nope. Give us some credit.”

It seems we’ll only get to the bottom of this debate, when Ice Cream Sandwich is released in November.

I conduct pretty much all of my business online. I use a dozen different web applications on a daily basis. I rely on these tools to get my work done, which makes it absolutely crucial that I do everything I can to protect my information. I do my best to find trustworthy applications, but in the end, some of my security comes down to something I do for myself — choosing good passwords.

A good password has to balance security with our ability to remember it, because minimizing the number of places that a password is written down or otherwise recorded is a good idea. It’s a tough line — the most memorable passwords are the easiest to crack, while the most secure are a jumble of characters that are impossible to recall. But there are some steps you can take to create a reasonably secure password that you’re less likely to forget.

 1. Forget about amusing passwords. Among the most common passwords are those that seem to amuse the person creating them — there are plenty that use profanity or insults. Some sites, such as Twitter, have actually created lists of words that are banned from use as passwords. A surprising number of them fall into this category. Passwords such as these aren’t secure, if only because they’re relatively common and more likely to be tried first if someone is trying to crack your password.

 2. Try longer phrases. Most of us have an easier time remember actual words and phrases than random assortments of letters and numbers. Using just one word, perhaps with a number tacked on to the end, is often less secure, however — certain methods of hacking passwords include simply running a dictionary through the password system. Using a longer phrase — especially if it includes numbers or other characters — makes it significantly harder to guess.

 3. Use a minimum of eight characters. Longer passwords are better. Most sites require you to have at least six characters in your password these days. Some are moving up to eight, but if you can go for longer, you should. That’s another benefit of using a phrase.

 4. Choose related, but not identical, passwords. You want to minimize the chances you’ll forget a password, but using identical passwords means that if one of your accounts hacked into, you’ll run the risk of having other accounts hacked as well. One option may be choosing phrases about the same topic, while another is changing key parts of your password to reflect the site you’re using it for.

 5. Don’t use personal details. In the event that someone is hoping to gain access to your personal accounts, details like your phone number, employment details and important dates in your life will be among the first passwords typically tried. Instead, you want to use something that may have personal meaning for you — at least enough to help you remember it — but that won’t be easy for anyone else to guess.
