Google Chrome has been my default browser for quite some time, but I’ve got to admit… I like what I’m seeing so far in Firefox 4, and the tweaks just keep on coming. One recent addition which has been talked about for some time is the option to create App Tabs.
Firefox 4’s App Tabs look pretty much like a pinned tab in Google Chrome. For now, an App Tab appears to simply force a tab to the left and display it with the favicon only. It’s a great way to save additional space on your tab bar, and a feature I use religiously in Chrome.
Right now, you’ll only find App Tabs in the Mozilla nightly builds of Firefox 4 — which you can download here for Windows, Mac, and Linux. To create an App Tab, just right click and select the option from the context menu.
Google Operating System reports that Google is testing a feature for signing in using multiple accounts.
While the post itself has a screenshot (which you can see above), it does not include any instructions on how to enable this functionality. This is obviously a limited or closed-beta test; the question is just how limited it is.
This functionality is not just “useful” – it is often vital. I have one account tied into an AdWords account, another account tied into Analytics, and yet a third Apps account. Merging them is impossible, especially as long as Google Apps doesn’t support Reader. Having a way to sign into all three at the same time from the same browser would certainly make things less irritating.
Late last week, mobile communication services provider fring released an updated iPhone app that enabled iPhone 4 owners to engage in unrestricted 2-way video calling over Wi-Fi or 3G internet with other iPhone, Android or Symbian devices. This garnered a lot of attention, mainly because Apple’s native FaceTime application works only over Wi-Fi and between iPhone users.
Cloud storage and document sharing startup Box.net is the latest startup to adopt HTML5. The startup is announced that it is incorporating a broad implementation of HTML5 drag and drop functionality that supports native interaction with desktop. So basically, you can drag and drop files from the desktop right into your Box.net web application.
The feature works on Firefox 3.6 and Chrome for PC (with support for Safari and Chrome on all platforms coming in the next few weeks). Box’s CEO and co-founder Aaron Levie says that Flash didn’t allow this at all due to security issues. While this is a small addition in terms of functionality, he believes that HTML5 provides a much richer user experience when it comes to enterprise applications and the interaction between the browser and the operating system . “HTML5 is the nail on the coffin of desktop applications because we can create this rich interactive experience that acts like a native app.” Levie adds that HTML5 is also appealing because it works on every device.
Rumor has it that Apple is gearing up to announce its “Next big thing” – a new personalized, mobile advertising system that could well be dubbed as the “iAd”. The buzz is building coincidently, or may be by design, towards the iPad shipment date, which is April 3rd. According to some executives familiar with the plan, Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs has described the new ad platform as “revolutionary” and “our next big thing”. The sources also informed that it will be officially unveiled at Madison Avenue on April 7th – exactly four days after iPad ships.
According to the sources at TechCrunch, the next version of iPhone OS, which is set to release this June will have Bing as its default search engine in Mobile Safari. Microsoft and Apple have reportedly been in talks over a possible search deal since January of this year, but since then there has been no real news on this.

Google has added a neat new Labs feature to Gmail that shifts the position of the icon column in your inbox to the left-hand side of the screen. The icon column is used to indicate emails with attachments, calendar invitations, chats and Buzz posts, but normally sits out of your eyeline on the right-hand side. Shifting it to the left gives the icons more prominence, and means that it’s easier to determine what’s in your inbox at a glance.
